Case Study: Web Redesign + SEO

San Anselmo landscape architect Jim Catlin is professional, creative, and knowledgeable, with a portfolio of gorgeous designs. None of this was apparent in the visual assault of his old website. Every page had its own visually complex background that distracted from the photos of the beautiful landscapes. The photo gallery slideshows had multiple images dissolving into other images on the same page at the same time — a very disjointed, unsettling user experience that didn’t help to sell his services.

The new web design shows off the landscape photos with a museum-style neutral background. The photo galleries are organized by project type, showing a single photo at a time; the site visitor can advance photos manually or in an automatic slideshow. The new site has more SEO copy, the kind of text that’s important for both humans and search engines to learn about Jim’s business and expertise. Well-researched keywords appear in all the right places for search engine optimization: behind the scenes in the HTML coding, in image alt tags, in headline tags, in internal links, and in body copy.
